Her petite stature and rumors of Romani heritage were enough for the Mean Girls to single her out. Her friends were subjected to ridicule for slumming, and interested boys were bullied in shows of power by the popular kids. Maria's school days were finally ending by the time the girl bloomed late, body finally looking feminine, and losing her baby fat to reveal an enchanting, delicate face. Her home life, unfortunately, was no respite from her nightmarish school life. With a drunk and abusive father and an adulterous mother strung out on pain pills, it was little wonder she'd foregone that life for one on the streets. Getting by, sleeping in shelters, squats, even the occasional carboard box. Doing odd jobs for a meal, or panhandling to get by.
