|
Silvi was born a part of the Tlingit tribe in Hoonah, Alaska, her mother working as an activist and biologist, her father owning a profitable bush plane business. This allotted Silvi with the opportunity to be put into a college, along with the help of several scholarships for indigenous people. She attended college at UCLA earning her doctorate in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology PhD Program with a focus in Conservation Biology and Veterinary Medicine. | ||
After college, Silvi started to help with non-profit organizations where she was born, as well as the Tongass National Forest, home to many native species that relied on the help of those like Silvi to preserve where they lived. She was renowned for being an active member in the community - bridging the gap between the local tribes to the ‘modern’ world. Instead of just focusing on her own community Silvi started to help those nearest her, then moving on to Los Angeles where conservation was severely needed in a city that kept growing and growing. Her idea being that just because you live in a city doesn’t mean you have to be out of touch with nature, that we as a people are responsible for those that cannot speak for themselves. She was a big supporter of marine conversation as well as on land. The ecosystem needed to be back in balance; the earth was crying out.
| |||
