Background Basil's Black Fury mom, living in a pack on the outskirts of St. Petersburg, got pregnant with a human who didn’t stay in the picture. When Basil was born he was rejected from the Black Furies for being male, and he was dumped in a Russian orphanage, under the name “Vasiliy”, and there he experienced neglect and other forms of abuse. A religious conservative couple from Michigan adopted him out of charity (though really to look good to the rest of their parish), but he was a nightmare due to trauma and the behavioral issues stemming from it. His foster parents thought physical correction, isolation, prayer, and fasting would tame him, but it didn’t. He was consigned to a facility for disabled children and they disowned him at the age of ten. Luckily his kin-fetch found a kind soul in a pack local to the facility he was kept in, and he was scooped up and adopted by a member of the local great lakes Children of Gaia pack, and there he was given the name Basil Brooks. When treated with love he flourished, and learning about who and what he really was helped him to find control, both physically and mentally. Unlike his packmates growing up, Basil worked hard to keep strict control of his rage and the transformations of his body. That way he could keep the litany no matter how upset and, as it happens, keep his other personality, Vasiliy the Protector, asleep and untroubled. Homeschooled through middle school, Basil went back to a public high school because he had his rage under control by then. He excelled and made friends, loved learning, and was fluent in English by then. Basil went to community college in Lansing and got an associate’s degree in psychology, then went on to get his bachelor’s and master’s in it as well, on scholarship. He decided to be a counselor, for humans and other Garou. For the latter he focuses on dealing with the ravages of Harano, with rage control, with Herd assimilation, the challenges of city living, and encouraging diplomatic relationships between tribes within cities. He is pansexual and nonbinary, the latter something he at this point finds quite amusing, given his Black Fury history. Despite this identity, he only uses he/him pronouns so as not to draw any ire from local Black Furies who may have rather old fashioned views on the matter and sense him as being one of their cast-off cubs, as he looks the part to a ridiculous degree. Vasiliy, his protector personality, is at his core a male Black Fury, with all of the black and white, merciless thinking and outlook of his forebears. At this stage in Basil’s emotional and mental development, and with the assistance of a strong Rx of mood stabilizers, he is able to have mental “chats” with Vasiliy, and even sometimes uses his own reflection in a mirror or reflective surface to facilitate the conference. His two alters are Basil and Vasiliy. Basil is the kind and compassionate aspect, and Vasiliy is the aspect that protects them from harm, and has the same worldview (for the most part) as any Black Fury. Vasiliy resulted from years of trauma and abuse suffered as a child in Russia and then with his foster parents in the United States. Basil was able to take primary control, with Vasiliy's consent, once they were adopted into the Children of Gaia pack and finally felt safe enough. As they have lived and settled into their new life in LA, Basil and Vasiliy are getting along much better and are rarely at odds with each other anymore.
