Mara came out of nowhere at the age of seven in Hawaii and grabbed attention in the surfing world, by the time she was fourteen she was owning every competition she was in, by the time she was 17 she was making a sustainable living at it. She has gained a reputation as a purist as she has flatly turned down every endorsement deal, or invitation to join a team down cold. In her own words "If I accepted the deal it would become work and who needs that!" Born in L.A. but she was raised in Hawaii with an aunt. For the last several years she has been traveling the world surfing circuits, but is well known for simply witching competitions for more favorable surfing conditions in other places. Recently she has moved to L.A. and pointedly made no official comment on it. RP Hooks
