A Tale from the Campfire
One day, a man found a beautiful woman asleep in the woods. He fell in love and brought her back to his tribe, who called the woods their home. The wise men of the tribe warned him to be wary of the woods, but he did not listen. Instead, he taught the woman to speak and follow the tribe’s ways, and she eventually became his wife. And soon after that, she bore him three children, and they were happy.
Now, back then, the men of the tribe were always going on hunting trips. Women were forbidden to join them, but this woman of the woods wanted to learn more. For, you see, her husband had taught her much, but not everything, and she wanted to know. So, she secretly followed her husband one day, hiding herself behind a rock. And there, in the dark, she watched the men sit around their campfires telling sacred stories and doing magic.
When the woman was discovered, the medicine men punished her by binding her into the mountain cat skin she wore and then transforming her into a terrible monster. So cursed, the woman ran from her tribe, destined to roam the hills until the end of her days. The tribe would call her the Wampus Cat, and forced the man to exile his children too. Reluctantly, he sent away his children, not wanting to draw the tribe’s ire. And then, after a while, people forgot about what happened.
The husband would later remarry and raise his family. One night, he was hunting with his dogs when they both suddenly screeched and ran off the path. The man gave chase, going deeper in the woods and ignoring the horrible smell in the air. Suddenly, something howled on the path behind him, and, after turning, the man dropped his rifle as he came face-to-face with a set of glowing yellow eyes. The creature howled; the man's skin nearly turned inside out in horror. And he fled.
But he could not escape. He fled to his home and, in the space of a breath, the door broke down from the force of the creature’s entrance. He screamed in terror just before its jaws closed about his head. Neither his new wife nor his children were spared, and met their ends that night. When the tribe found the dead, they learned the truth: that the medicine men did not punish the woman; they only revealed what she really was. And their days were numbered.
Roleplay Hooks
| The Good Fight | “Were I to attempt to be good to everyone, to the entire world and to all the creatures living in it, it would be a drop of fresh water in the salt sea. In other words, a wasted effort. Thus, I decided to do specific good; good which would not go to waste. I’m good to myself and my immediate circle.” – A. Sapkowski. |
