Background
Nova was born and raised in the Spanish Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, destined at birth to be just another barrio kid born to immigrant parents - her mother, from Mexico and her father, from Puerto Rico. Through involvement in a STEM club for disadvantaged kids, however, she was plucked from obscurity and given a scholarship to MIT where she earned her undergrad degree in physics while still a teenager. Things eventually soured for her in Boston, however, and she found herself transferring to UCLA to complete her doctorate; in the process of which her works in advanced physics earned her a rare distinction - that of being doctoral student running her own lab with a research grant. LA is a fresh start for her, a chance at a new life she couldn't have in Boston.
