Meili is the daughter of immigrants from Hong Kong, who used their cultural and economic connections back home to run a successful trading business in Los Angeles. That gave them enough disposable income to try to make something of their daughter, flying her across the country and around the world, hiring coaches, buying books, to train their daughter into a Chess Champion.
She didn't become a chess champion but she did manage to get the title of WGM at the age of 16. But that was her peak, and she shifted from the tournament circuit to graduating high school, and playing online and streaming.
She became a Mage when her way of calculating, and analyzing positions sounded promising to her mentor, a Russian FIDE IM she met on the circuit. It was her who pushed her to try hard online, and really bring out that latent potential.
And of course that awakening is why she totally shifted from tournaments to all online. More games, more positions, more entropy reversal.
But she has a lot to learn about the war, and why anyone would oppose what people like her even do!
