"For I am the Law, and the Law is not mocked."

Biography

Augustus Grant was born to a life of privilege and luxury. His father was an American diplomat, well established in the halls of politics. His mother was a Greek socialite, whose family lineage could be traced to the earliest days of the Byzantine Empire. More than that, she was a maga of the Order of Hermes, and her husband her loyal and devoted custos. As Gus matured into a charming and intelligent youth, it was assumed that he would follow his father's footsteps, and become custos himself.

Gus would go on to attend law school at Yale, where he graduated with the highest honors. But in the early 2000s, the Reckoning rocked the entire world. His parents were killed in a freak earthquake, leaving Gus alone to fend for himself. But in the midst of this tragedy, he also experienced his Awakening.

Without his mother to provide instruction, Gus would travel to his family's ancestral home in Greece. On the island of Korvos, he would be apprenticed to his uncle Nikos. For fifteen years, he underwent the classic Hermetic apprenticeship. His studies in Ars Magica would lead him to study the lore and history of Sumeria, the first human nation. In time, he would pass his Apprentice's Gauntlet. During that grueling test, he encountered the angelic being known only as Zeriphiel. This emissary of the High Umbrood would lay its blessing upon his thesis. Having passed the test, Gus was granted his wand and his pentacle, fully vesting him as a true magus of Hermes Trismegistus. He earned himself a place in House Quaeistori, where he would serve as one of the Order's judges.

Returning to America, Gus resumed his legal practice. In time, he would be named a senior partner in the prestigious law firm of Cassidy, Grant, and Parker. Recently, the decision was made to open a branch of their practice in Los Angeles. Gus volunteered to be the one to travel west and settle down in LA. A house has been bought and an office building leased. Gus has taken his place as a fellow of the Ascension Lodge chantry, where he can put his skills to use. In the ongoing journey to Ascension, Gus is a gentleman scholar, a shrewd lawyer, an emissary to the courts of angels. He speaks the Word Justice, and will help build the Perfected City of Pymander with bricks of law.

The magus speaks. The cosmos answers. So mote it be.

RP Hooks
  • Attorney at Law - Gus has been a lawyer for all his adult life. He graduated summa cum laude from Yale, and is a senior partner for the prestigious law firm of Cassidy, Grant, and Parker. He has a sterling reputation for integrity, and is well known for being relentless in the courtroom. And he will not ever take a case defending someone who is clearly guilty. If you have connections to the legal field, you have certainly heard his name.
  • Straight out of Kavos - Gus missed being born a Greek citizen by mere months, and he retains strong ties to his family back in Greece. His uncle Nikos maintains the old family homestead on the island of Corfu. If you have similar ties, you may have something in common.
  • Yesterday Defines Tomorrow - Outside his legal practice, Gus has a keen interest in archaeology. He spent a year and a half volunteering at an archaeological dig in southern Iraq, and has picked up a good bit of knowledge about Sumeria. Are you also fascinated by humanity's most distant past? You may have something to talk about.
Contacts
  • Sophia - An honor and a privilege. I look forward to working with you.
  • Wolfe - You actually believe you can out-think me, don't you? That's adorable.
  • Mizha - I'll find them. I'll see Justice is done.
  • Emilia - If you're ready to learn, then I'm ready to teach. I hope you find my instruction useful.
  • Gwendolyn - I look forward to working with you further.
Stereotypes
  • Akashyana - Their mental discipline is easily a match for our own. Their martial skills rival the most accomplished Flambeau war magus. Worthwhile allies on our Council.
  • Celestial Chorus - I respect their convictions and I don't begrudge anyone their right to adhere to a religious practice. It's fortunate that most Choristers don't prosyletize. I'm perfectly capable of making my own religious choices.
  • Cult of Ecstasy - Contrary to popular belief, not all Hermetic magi are joyless old hermits, shut up in their towers gathering dust. I can see the potential in the Ecstatic praxis. It's just not for me. I have my reasons.
  • Dreamspeakers - I regret that there's such a wide gulf between my ancestors and those of the Kha'vadi. We all lived in caves and called down spirits, once. I wish I knew how to make amends and bring us back together.
  • Euthanatos - Sometimes, I'm afraid I'll never understand the Chakravanti. As a magus, I can accept the role they perform. But as a living, breathing man, I can't help but be frightened of what they must do.
  • Society of Ether - I find I enjoy the Etherics. Sure, their Science might come across as silly and whimsical at times. But they have class. That counts for a lot.
  • Verbenae - They're a lot like us. If we are the thorn, they're the flower. The Venus to our Mars. It's a wild and unruly garden they tend, but there's nobody better suited to the job than the Verbenae.
  • Virtual Adepts - I can't help but chuckle that these Technocratic turncoats call themselves 'Mercurial Elite'. Still, I'd rather have them as friends than as enemies.
  • The Technocratic Union - They failed to wipe us out at Mistridge. They failed to impose their absolute tyranny. For all their terror tactics and ruthlessness, one thing remains constant--the Technocracy has failed. I only hope they realize this sooner than later, and come to their fucking senses before we're forced to wipe them out. The Ascension War has done nothing but damage the whole entire world. The sooner they understand this, the sooner they can join us in uplifting humanity.
  • Nephandi - You... you really thought that enslaving yourself to those things out there was a good idea? That'd almost be hilarious, if you weren't such a sick, twisted fuck.
  • Marauders - See this? This right here? This is why we do not throw fireballs and lightning bolts down Main Street. It's bad enough that they're all wall-eatingly insane. Their insanity is contagious. That takes them right from 'pitiable' to 'Jesus fucking Christ' territory.
