Belasco
The Belasco
While there are a plethora of old theaters in Hollywood, one in particular rises above the rest in terms of history, drama and beauty. The Belasco is the most recent of LA's lost treasures to be restored to its original grandeur. Those that step through its doors are transported to another time, giving modern Angelenos a chance to experience the glamour of a bygone era.
Designed by architects Morgan, Walls & Clements, the then-new construction was a six-story reinforced concrete structure showcasing exquisite attention to detail. Its cast stone decorations display an unforgettable fusion of Churrigueresque, Spanish Renaissance, Moorish, and Gothic details. Most of the building’s amazing detail has survived well to this day, including the striking dome ceiling.
During the 1930s, Belasco Theater participated in The Federal Theater Project (FTP). The FTP was a New Deal project to fund theatre and performing arts in the United States during the Great Depression. It was considered one of five Federal One projects sponsored by the Works Projects Administration (WPA). The FTP’s primary goal was employment of out-of-work artists, writers, and directors, with the secondary aim of entertaining poor families and creating relevant art. This is a mission still supported to this day, with the Belasco offering workshops, scholarships and diverse programs to help struggling artists find safe, supportive environments to focus on their craft and passions.
In March 2011, The Belasco unveiled a grand multi-million dollar restoration, after being purchased by Vogue Star LLC. At 40,000 sq. ft., the modern Belasco features a main theatre, ballroom, basement lounge, wine/tapas bar, and two restaurants. It hosts concert events, theater productions, symphonies and even occasionally serves as an extravagant wedding venue.
County of the Shattered Scale
While the public façade of the Belasco is that of a bustling hospitality business, the even more glamourous reality is that it holds within it the Freehold of the Shattered Scale. Having been opened ten years ago from the relocated spark of a Balefire endangered by the rising tide of Banality and increased incursions of the Dark Kin, Count Gray the Redeemed, Lion of the Silver Oaks and his closest courtiers, Anima Trix and Daryl Webb. In the last decade the Freehold has flourished and keeps its doors open to all Fae who follow the spirit of the Escheat, whether they are Seelie or Unseelie. It is whispered that the Count despises any who owe allegiance to House Balor, but even they are welcome, so long as they honor the customs of Hospitality.
