Katie
Katie Brenda Silverman isn't the kind of girl that immediately screams "hacker" to the average person, nor does she scream "rich" or "loaded" but she is all of these things and more. Born on November 1, 1998 in a suburb of San Diego she came from a very modest family that was somewhere between working class and middle class; well enough off to not be in debt collections and knee deep in credit card debt but not off well enough to be driving the latest cars with one of those brand spanking new houses in a gated community either. From an early age Katie had an eye for tech and gadgets as she played with secondhand video game consoles from a cousin, the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 and began taking them apart to at first swap LED lights before eventually buying DIY kits online to upscale the resolution and repair broken consoles and computers for fun in her spare time often. She in fact got her first computer this way, getting an otherwise decent model that appeared to be inoperable and with the right parts cannibalized from other gadgets was brought back to working order. Eventually she decided to pick up coding and programming books from the library and mostly used this serious (and what many would argue professional) knowledge for fun, either improving the performance of her OS and graphics card to remove bloat from system processes or making her own little digital pet. In many ways she was a prodigy hiding in plain sight with such advanced understanding at a young age but to her it was just normal; it was something she enjoyed and was passionate about and that everyone had their own natural talents. Initially this was just nothing more than a hobby, something she did in her room or in the garage when she wasn't hanging out with friends, goofing off at the park, or attempting to become the next Tony Hawk (this particular phase didn't go so well and didn't last very long) but something would soon inspire her to use her knowledge for other ends.
One day her father was unceremoniously fired from his job, pegged as the fall guy and framed for acts he didn't commit that resulted in his termination. This turned Katie's world upside down seeing her hard working, honest father getting screwed and let go form a company where he worked for 20 years and it challenged her entire world view. She believed that as long as you were honest and worked hard everything would work out and yet she saw bills begin to add up, late notices coming in as she watched him struggle to get another job. The system, she came to believe was rigged; that if you weren't at the very top it was designed to keep you in your place if not press you a little further down than you were. What good were a set of rules if they were designed to insulate those that would weaponize it against you at the first opportunity? Perhaps to Katie, this was the most important lesson her father ever taught her, even if he still believed in what he taught her, even if he still believed hard work and honesty would make everything right... she wasn't going to allow herself to ever be put in the same position. But that wasn't enough, the more it rested on her mind the more she felt the need to fight fire with fire and with a vengeful spirit she began to enact her revenge scheme.
With all the knowledge she accumulated, the library books, the first hand experience, the information she gleamed she began to turn her hobby into a precision blade to strike at those that hurt her family. She managed to gain access to the company's database, to financials, emails, phone numbers, text messages, addresses and from there she used that to access bank accounts, tax information and she used this budding treasure trove of information to systematically destroy the guilty parties in question. It began to feel like a game and one that she had a natural talent for, she started a multi-pronged digital assault from petty harassment by signing the perps up for spam email and a ridiculous large, steady stream of pizza deliveries (no sauce, no cheese, no toppings, cooked to a crisp) to the heavy guns of leaking select documents to the media and eventually getting a local journalist to bite, which in turn snowballed into local and then regional media. Months later after a building whirlwind of bad press the police ended up making several arrests all thanks to 'anonymous tips'. Her father was offered his job back, he felt vindicated in his beliefs... but as far as Katie was concerned he didn't need to know that... nobody needed to know it was her.
She could've left good enough alone there, but it felt empowering to do something like that and what was originally born from anger turned into a form of sadistic glee ruining these bad actors and doling out vigilante justice in the digital realm. She'd continue to do this throughout high school as she made the 'bad guys', the Black Hats her primary target as she continued to flex, hone, and improve her skills and she'd skim some money off the top for herself before redistributing their funds to various charities and causes. She would rinse and launder the money through a budding cryptocurrency ecosystem and over time she would put her own legitimately earned money into the growing alternative economic space, spreading her assets into various digital tokens to give herself the best shot of riding an impending wealth building wave that only came around once a generation. During the Great Crypto Bull Run of 2018 she became rich beyond her wildest dreams at the age of 20 and through her investing advice her best friend Jessica rode that wave herself to give herself a comfortable life through her own investments. But you'd never know looking at her.
In spite of being by all accounts filthy rich (even by LA standards) after moving to the city a year and some change prior nobody would ever be able to tell just by looking at her. She still drives her 96 Mitsubishi Eclipse, she still works, first at In-N-Out before going to her present job at 7-Eleven and working her way up to manager, not because she has to but because she uses it as an opportunity to socialize and catch up on Hulu. She doesn't live in a McMansion but she lives in a good enough house. The only giveaway would be her monster computer setup, with a cutting edge, top of the industry PC rig and a laptop she brings with her but even that's not entirely unusual when you find out she does some freelancing programming work on the side. By all means, she is an unassuming hacker, a genius that the average onlooker would never suspect at first glance. That said to this day she continues to do her work online, keeping her hacking exploits as a second life that even those closest to her are shut off from, careful to meticulously cover her tracks the best she can through VPNs and cryptography to act as multiple layers of protection, throwaway handles, everything you'd expect from a digital criminal that operates by her own code. Sometimes rules need to be broken; nobody's going to save you except yourself.
- 7-11: Maybe you're a customer/regular. She's the manager of the one in Little Osaka.
- Computers: Got an interest in them? Maybe you've chatted or gamed with her online?
- Out 'n About: She goes out a lot to socialize with people and meet new ones.
- Crypto-economics: She's a big believer of the alternative economic system in cyberspace
Macabre - My best friend, we go way back her and I. She's a bit of a homebody but that don't bother me. Working at 7-11 has its perks though when it comes to movie night!
