Background
In March of 1992, Cristiana and Juan Torres, two hispanic Americans, decided to leave their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Choosing to leave thier suburban lives behind to become Catholic missionaries in Trinidad. Nine years and several failed pregnancies later, they finally welcomed their daughter, Maya, into the world in 2001.
Maya's parents raised her deeply entrenched in their faith. They wentg so far as to enrolling her in an all girl's Catholic school and had her attend mass multiple times a week with them. The school is where she met her best friend, Carmen Dominguez. The two girls, though several years apart in age, did everything together, from attending Soca Warrior futbol games to enjoying the amazing Carnival. They even shared some time before juvenile court judges, due to Maya's "sticky fingers" in several department stores.
To get herself prepared for her "future" she began taking classes in boxing and tae kwon do. She attended countless classes to become as skilled as her sensai could make her. She spent every weekend traveling with Carmen hiking throughout the forests of their beautiful land.
After highschool, Maya enrolled at University of the West Indies. She majored in computer technology and cyber security. She loved the fact that she could travel anywhere in the world and learn anything with the help of computers. She often lost herself into this technological Neverland. She was quite skilled at finding her way into systems she did not belong in...banking systems and security firms. For most firms, she simply sold her security suggestions. For other, not so "pure" entities, she skimmed funds, knowing they would never discover the missing funds. She accrued a nice little nest egg from these diverse ventures. Having completed her degree early, Maya was preparing to look into her next steps as she helped Carmen with her final year of high school.
One Thursday night, just before graduation, Cristiana, Juan and Carmen's mother, Santia, all sat Maya and Carmen down for a family discussion. The girls looked at each other filled with confusion. That was when the 3 adults decided to let the girls know that they had made the decision to move to the old leper colony at Chacachacare Island, on the far east coast of Trinidad, to continue their mission.
Many screams and tears later, Carmen agreed to accompany the adults on their travels, but not Maya. She decided that this was her sign that it was time to begin her own life of adventure. So late that night, Maya gathered up her clothes, laptop and several computer programs that she had written and she left her home for the last time. The girls "borrowed" Santia's car and Carmen dropped Maya off at the airport at Port of Spain.
