"Biohacking involves getting a little out in front of scientific consensus."

Biography

What happens when a hacker goes to medical school?

In Thayer's case, they keep hacking. A specialist in computational biology, Thayer developed several methods and patents related to biosimilar peptide synthesis during his time in the medical scientist training program at Stanford. These methods allowed precise control of the neurohormonal axis, a promising new front in the field of personalized medicine. There was only one problem: synthesizing biosimilars for individual patients was egregiously expensive, certainly not cost-effective as far as insurers and the federal government were concerned. Funding agencies were utterly uninterested. Thayer seemed destined for the doldrums of clinical practice after completing his Internal Medicine residency.

But for individuals for whom resources weren't an issue, Thayer's methods were a promising way to maintain youth, vitality, and longevity. Thayer recently established Medicina Primaevus in LA, a longevity medicine practice focused on optimizing hormonal and neurotransmitter levels. It's a small practice and being a patient there involves frequent blood draws and whole body MRI scans. The long waiting list and high price tag (which isn't publicized) associated with the practice, however, are a testament to its results.

Along the way, Thayer has used the funds from the practice to continue his research. He maintains an adjunct appointment at UCLA, occasionally attending medical school conferences. Despite his advanced methods, much of his research involves seeking answers from the past, focusing on restoring primal physiology that has been degraded by microplastics, hormonal analogues and other toxins. He is a fixture in the "quantified self" movement, active in wellness and fitness discussions on Twitter and other social media, though he shies away from influencers and the like.

RP Hooks
  • Computers: Thayer's PhD is in Computer Science, and he certainly knows his way around code.

  • Hacking: See above; Thayer's been a part of the hacker community since his early teens, and was a member of Cult of the Dead Cow (cDc) in the late nineties. His handle was/is BitWraith, and he's still active on a few messaging boards.

  • Nocturnal: Thayer is a night owl. While he spends quite a lot of time in his lab, he wanders extensively about the city and might show up just about anywhere. Inspiration comes in many forms, and Thayer is constantly seeking new experiences and stimuli.

  • Coffee: Unsurprisingly, Thayer takes his coffee seriously. He has a gaggle of espresso machines that he's tweaked, toying with pressure and extraction settings. He can be found anywhere the bean is served.
