Biography

Valis doesn't talk about his past much, and even with basic internet sleuthing, there's not much to find out beyond some pretty basic things plus what he is willing to talk about. He was born in Korea but his birth family gave him up for adoption. At least, that's the way he tells it. He was adopted by Christian missionaries from Texas and taken back there as a baby, so he's Korean in DNA only, frankly. He was always a sickly kid and it turned out he has Hypothyroidism. To anyone else, this just means that every morning like clockwork, he takes a tiny pill. He is very aggressive about it because he currently enjoys being alive and that pill helps him continue to be alive. As well, he has a deep sensitivity to cold. He chills frightfully easy and always looks pale and pink-cheeked as if he's constantly cold. That's because he is. "Thanks Obam... I mean Hypothyroidism! *grumble*" You'll see him dripping in fur and knitted things like cardigans, sweaters, and scarves or cowls in winter, and to be honest, his personal style of dress, beyond keeping him warm, pretty much looks exactly like the Japanese street fashion, "Mori Kei", but with a bit more whimsy to it here and there. In summer, He's still Mori Kei but with less layers and breezier fitting. He likes fashionable whimsy and this is how he expresses that in himself. His color palette that he seems to enjoy are cool greys, dusty blues to medium-dark blues, and white. That compliments his most unusual features.

You see, Valis appears nearly albino. If you ask him, he gets annoy-... he says he's not albino *grumble*. He's a firm believer in not armchair diagnosing anyone with anything though human curiosity and speculation is natural. He won't talk about it but it's not hard to learn that he didn't always look this way. He had a very severe thyroid reaction that put him in a coma in hospital for years. During that time, his body reacted very negatively, and he began to turn pale and all of his hair went white. Even his eye color seemed effected, going from typical Asian brown to a pale lavender-blue. Hormones can do crazy things to a person! None of this is information Valis will willingly talk about but the internet is forever and he's on the internet in some nooks and crannies as his medical case was briefly of some note in the medical community.

As well, he was originally raised in a (no longer) small town in Texas that had virtually no Asians, even ones as disconnected from their culture as Valis is, so he received quite some racially motivated bullying. He got it for being Korean. He got it for not being Korean enough. He's uninterested and uninvested in "being Korean" because it's never served him any good purpose and he has no way to just suddenly be it, so he's figured... just be a person. The rest will sort itself out. Once Hallyu hit, the big cultural "Korean Wave" that brought the rise of Korean Pop idols or "KPop" idols, he just found it annoying for people to approach him about his heritage. He runs from his Korean heritage but one day it'll catch up to him. Will he be ready for it? He seems very perturbed by the name his missionary parents gave him and has done what he could to scrub all references to it but people really wanting to know can do research and find it. (OOC: page Valis to discuss learning his original name) Anyone who calls him by that name will simply be ignored and avoided, plainly, just cut off entirely. His parents were very abusive and that name calls up feelings he never wants to feel ever again.

Personality

Valis never got to be a happy kid. This has affected him deeply. As well, his fae side is coming to terms with the banality of this Modern Age. He’s a man reaching for the stars in a sky he no longer has faith still exists. This doesn’t stop him from reaching, however. He’s just decided to buy a pack of glow-in-the-dark stars and stick them up in his own man-made sky. Even when he doesn’t always believe, he wants others to believe, and that effort alone brings back a little magic to his soul. He is intent on finding his lost Inner Child and setting it free to be happy. A little silliness here and there is fun! His other pursuit that he is still quite shy about is his sexuality. He loves people not parts, so is still trying to figure out what he is, romantically speaking. He is easy-going and charming with men, women, non-binary folks, anyone willing to give him the time of day and their attention. He's never had the courage to go to a Pride Parade on his own, but wishes he could.

Because of his looks, a few things irritate him; calling him "oppa", the popular Korean phrase that roughly means "older brother" but can be used to mean "guy you'd like to date/you're already dating", or "ahjussi" which means "uncle" or "sir" when speaking to an older male that you don't know well, unironically asking if his mother knows he's out alone by himself, and fussing excessively over his apparent health. He already hates how sick he is. Fussing excessively about it really just rubs his face in his medical problems. His mother was a helicopter mom and now that he's on his own, he expects people to trust that he knows everything he needs to know about his health and that he will adequately care for his own medical requirements. The one thing he has totally embraced from his Mother Country and others as well, are romance dramas, animes, and mangas/manwhas, etc. He's seen them all and owns them all! Fujoshis and KDrama/CDrama/JDrama fans everywhere are jealous of his romance and Boys Love collection!

He’s not a big tech person but he’s not a Luddite or technophobe. He just prefers interacting with the world in more personal ways. How sincere is an email when he can write a letter? He does have a guilty pleasure of giggling at memes online via his ancient Windows 7 laptop. He calls his cellphone a “dumbphone” because it’s an ancient wonder, as in you wonder how it can still work! It has basic phone functions and a reeeeally tiny screen that maybe could access the intarwebz, but best of all, it's got a physical keyboard that slides down from behind! It makes a lovely >POK-ah< sound with each press of any tiny square key. He can text on that thing with lightning speed which only adds to the impression that this ManBoy has no life except for poetry, tea, and romance dramas.

Valis has just begun to take his poetry to publishers for making books and he's managed to gain some attention for the depth of emotion his poetry inspires. Not yet on the New York Times Best Seller list, he looks like he's on that trajectory.

Silky Voice
Valis has a mid-range, warm, silky voice that could charm lions to sit politely and listen. His voice is soothing and enchanting and it's a little too easy to fall under its spell just listening to mundane conversation, let alone when he's trying to inflame the emotions of others deliberately.

Tea Shop Owner
Valis has just moved to LA and is in the process of converting a properly zoned old house into the tea shop of his dreams, named "Ethereali-Tea". He hopes to make it a cozy sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of typical mortal life and the Changeling fight against banality. He is an expert at hand-blending teas, and is also adept at more medicinal herb teas. He knows tea is not a substitute for modern medicine, but sometimes all you need is something warm, flavourful, and sinus-clearing to help you feel better for your whole day. He's also made it a point to collect rare and valuable teas and tea crockery. There are locked cabinets of expensive tea bricks/cakes/discs and tea sets from around the world for princely sums, meant only for true tea aficionados. If the tea exists on the mortal realm, Valis either has it or knows where to get it, but it's going to cost you. High quality tea is not cheap! If you come at Valis with a canister of Nestea crystals with its familiar yellow scoop, he will hiss and turn from you like a movie vampire being shown a cross! Do not blaspheme his Sacred tea shop with that dreck! The atmosphere of his shop is that any mortal as well as any Magical Race or creature is welcome so long as they play by The Rules each race has. There's a noticeable Pride Sticker in a window right by the front door to show that all good people, LGBTQIA+ and allies, are welcome.
