Yaroslav Emelianenko
THE LAST SON

"There are things which survive the winter not because they are stronger than it, but because they refuse to die."

At First Glance

Yaroslav Emelianenko carries himself with the unconscious bearing of someone raised to expect that others would notice when he entered a room. In his early thirties, he is broad-shouldered and powerfully built without looking cumbersome, with dark hair worn somewhat long and the persistent shadow of a beard along a sharp, aristocratic face. His gray eyes tend toward the cold and watchful, and there is something distinctly foreign in both his accent and mannerisms.

His clothes are practical and generally inexpensive, creating an odd contrast with his posture and careful manners. He looks more like someone accustomed to hardship than comfort: old boots, durable coats, worn denim, clothing selected because it survives travel. Even at rest there is a contained physical intensity about him, a sense that stillness is something practiced rather than natural.

He speaks English capably but not effortlessly, with a distinctly Slavic accent and occasional unusually formal turns of phrase. American idiom still catches him off guard. He tends toward directness, listens more than his appearance might initially suggest, and has the occasionally disconcerting habit of looking at someone as if measuring not merely what they said, but whether they meant it.

What Is Known

Yaroslav is a recent arrival to Los Angeles and an obvious immigrant from the former Soviet world. While he has visited before, America is still new enough to him that the sprawling highways, casual excess, and peculiar local customs sometimes receive the same wary examination he gives everything else and he has to stop and think for a minute.

He does not speak much about his family. What little he offers suggests old money that no longer exists, relatives who are dead or unreachable, and circumstances that made remaining in Eastern Europe impossible. Whatever he once possessed, very little of it seems to have followed him to Los Angeles.

RP Hooks

Russian Exile: Yaroslav is Russian-speaking, unmistakably Eastern European, and only recently arrived in the United States after several years spent wandering.

The Old World: His manners, bearing, and occasional turns of phrase suggest an upbringing considerably more formal than his present circumstances would imply.

New to America: He understands the broad shape of American culture considerably better than its details. Los Angeles in particular remains a maze of unfamiliar customs, highways, slang, institutions, and assumptions.

A Fighting Man: Posture, composure, and the way he watches trouble and smiles at it make it fairly obvious that violence is not theoretical to him.

Wanderer: Germany, England, the Carpathian Mountains, Russia, and now Los Angeles. Travelers, immigrants, refugees, expatriates, and people accustomed to living without permanent roots have an easy point of connection.

History & Politics: Yaroslav has a strong interest in history, lineage, politics, leadership, and the rise and fall of nations. He seems to have received a 'classical' education prep school style.

The Other World: Those with appropriate supernatural connections may know considerably more: Silver Fang. Philodox. Fostern. A young Garou with unusually strong breeding and the uncomfortable weight of old names behind him.
