Yuchen

From LiberationMUSH Wiki

Biography

When she first came to the United States as the mail-order bride of an overworked software engineer, Yuchen was a quiet, retiring young woman barely old enough to vote and whose only previous experience with American culture came from countless hours spent in a movie theater. Her first husband hanged himself after a particularly brutal stretch of crunch time, and while her second -- a notorious Chinatown criminal defense attorney -- may have taken her out to cocktail parties, professional dinners, and the like, it wasn't until her third marriage that she found a husband who actually encouraged her to go out into the world, helped her make friends, and made a real effort to bring her out of her shell. Today, she's a resolutely cheerful, friendly, helpful and patient person who hardly resembles the little mouse she once was.

RP Hooks
  • Bad Luck: Through no fault of her own, Yuchen has lost three husbands in less than five years. It's enough to give someone a complex, and if you've had a similar run of bad luck she's sure to be sympathetic.
  • Candy: With the encouragement of her last husband, Yuchen has started a small artisan candy shop catering to aficionados of gourmet and exotic sweets, with a special focus on blending Chinese and American confectionery traditions.
  • China: Her childhood was spent on Hainan Island in southern China, although the British lilt in her English points to her having been educated, to one degree or another, in Hong Kong. Should you happen to share a similar cultural background, she's sure to react warmly.
  • Cooking: Yuchen enjoys cooking for herself and others. She's always experimenting with new recipes, seeking out exotic ingredients, or finding guinea pigs to try out whatever she's whipped up. Luckily for all concerned, she's also an excellent chef, so it's usually not too much of a trial unless she's inadvertently used an ingredient you're allergic to.
  • Crime: There's no nice way of saying it: her second husband was a crook, and when he was thrown off a twenty-story building by some of his erstwhile associates, the prevailing opinion was that he had it coming. While there has never been any whisper of a hint that his widow was involved in his business dealings, any person with ties to organized crime in Chinatown could potentially have been introduced to Yuchen at some innocuous social occasion.
  • Hollywood: Her third husband, Geoffrey Wright, was a character actor who had a successful career in television, mostly playing supporting roles in daytime soap operas. Anyone who's been involved in the industry over the past few years may have met Geoffrey and Yuchen socially or professionally, before his unfortunate and untimely death from leukemia.
  • Human Trafficking: Having been a victim of it herself, Yuchen is an adamant opponent of human trafficking who donates money, time, and effort to raising awareness, pushing for stricter and harsher laws, and providing help to the victims.
  • Movies: Yuchen loves the movies, and is always willing -- indeed, eager -- to talk with people who share her interest, when she's not actually at the theater herself. She'll travel all over the city to watch obscure movies in run-down indie theaters, and is perpetually interjecting references to the world of film into her conversations.
  • The Outdoors: Well, she's not much for hiking or scuba-diving or other forms of "adventure" outdoorsiness, but she does enjoy visiting parks, gardens, and other more curated outdoor spots.
