Zyanya

The entrance to the Underworld is in Los Angeles. ~ Rick Riordan; "The Lightning Thief" (2010) Background Yeritzi Hidalgo was born in the 1960's in Mexico, a part of the interbreeding of the necromancy-talented Mayan clans discovered by Vespasiano Giovanni. She grew with Benedetto Giovanni, a mortal scion of the Kindred clan whose name he carried, as his friend and playmate -- and as they entered their teens, as his occasional lover, as well. When Benedetto was Embraced by Vespasiano and given the name Sextus (as he was his sire's sixth childe), the newly-embraced Kindred chose to make Yeritzi his personal ghoul, so that his friend and lover could be with him through eternity. Eventually, of course, he would also embrace her himself, with Vespasiano giving her the name Zyanya, meaning 'forever' in the Mayan tongue, because it was so that she could be at his side forever that Sextus embraced her in the first place. It was not to last. In 1990, the Sabbat launched a surprise attack against Vespasiano's estate, during a dinner party when all of the local members of the clan were present. Zyanya had a stake driven through her heart within moments of the start of the assault, the sabbat attackers planning to return to take her body away later, after completion of their raid. Members of the Hidalgo family, ghouls to the Giovanni kindred, who'd survived the attack by hiding in the kitchen, fled the estate as the raid continued -- and, happening across Zyanya with a stake through her heart, took her with them. The surviving members of the Hidalgo family went into hiding, also taking with them a captured sabbat youngling, who they planned (and continue) to use as a never-ending source of vitae. Their plan for Zyanya was to keep her staked, as a 'backup' source. It would be ten years before a younger member of the Hidalgo family, feeling more need to remain loyal to the kindred he once served than to use one of those same kindred as a tool for survival, pulled the stake from her heart. Of course, Zyanya was angered by how the Hidalgo ghouls had treated her, but she also respected their actions -- in their position, with survival at stake (no pun intended), she likely might have done the same. More importantly, the Hidalgo ghouls were, and continued to be, family to her -- and she'd been raised as a Giovanni, making family of utmost import to her. They'd survived, and that was what was important. She would hate them as individuals for what they'd done, but she would never turn against them. Still, as far as she and any of the surviving Hidalgo ghouls knew, all of the Giovanni kindred they'd known had perished in the assault on Vespasiano's estate. Wishing to escape from Sabbat-controlled territory, Zyanya pulled together what resources she could, made her way northwards to Tijuana. From there, she made her way across the border into San Diego and then northwards to Los Angeles -- the last place she'd heard there might be a Giovanni family presence.
