Campfire Tales and Quiet Discussion

Participants: Elyse Niall Everlee Alaska Kateri Wren

Location: Skidrow Rooftop Garden

Date and Time: Feb 5, 2023 - 12:30 am

Summary: During an improptu gathering, Elyse tells the story of one of the other cubs that went through her Rite of Passage with her.

══════════════════ Rooftop Gardens - Skid Row - Central City ══════════════════

One of many rooftop gardens that dot the district and part of a greater
bolder movement. This one looks over one of the main thoroughfares
through the heart of Skid Row. From this roof at least five other garden's
from its type can be seen. This garden uses simple raised bed system and
takes advantage of California's generous climate to grow food nearly all year
round. The raised beds as well as trellising allow for the garden to take
advantage of the minimal space to its best efforts. The raised beds are made
of cedar.

There's a plastic folding table over in one corner with several
black plastic germination trays. There's a dated looking radio siting on the
table, too old to be worth stealing. There is a roll up sleeping mat stashed
under the table and a few lawn chairs, proving that the space isn't just for
working. The ladder can be blocked off from the top and the garden and the
building rooftop is high enough to allow for private conversations.

There is a smile for Niall from E'vee. Reaching out a foot, she uses it to nudge at Wren. Because. She nods a little, "Alaska, I agree with Kat." She goes quiet for a long moment and then she says, "This sept has never worked that way. But by that same token, Peacekeeper-rhya isn't the typical Alpha, either. He knows the value of his Kin. Sometimes, and he's said as much, he doesn't always see the things he should. He counts on the Officers, sure. But he counts on others too. I think he'd want to know how we're feeling. That we'd prefer to keep things low key, but still be recognized for what we prefer to be kept low key. I think we do him a disservice thinking that he wouldn't want to be told. His shoulders carry a weight, but if we go to him with suggestions, not complaints, then I think the outcome would be different."

Elyse makes her way up onto the rooftop; before she fully arrives, she hangs away from the ladder and pats her pockets with her other hand, finds a small notebook and a pen, then clambers up the rest of the way. She's a bit surprised to see so many people up here, albeit not in a negative way -- a pleasantly shocked face. "Oh wow, so many people up here!" She waves a hand in Kateri's and Alaska's direction, dips her head respectfully to Niall, and says, "Hey all! Just a moment." The lupus-in-human-form trots over to a tarp on the roof in the corner, pulls it up and and drags out an old ratty backpack. She unzips it and stores the notebook in there, then shoves it back under the tarp, moving to join the larger group with a quick glance towards Wren before sitting down like a sack of rice unceremoniously dumped off a truck.

Alaska looks over at the tarp then back to Everlee, "Yeah I get it. I value you all. Kateri knows it, you know it, Hell knows that Wren knows it. " Sitting forward more as she is on the wall. "Elyse, you live up here? You know there are rooms you can stay at down at the sept. Or other places you can stay. I have room in my RV if you really need it. Table flips down into a bed. "

"Peacekeeper'rhya sees more than he lets on." Niall says. "I have went to him with things that troubled me, and he was already aware." Niall bows his head a bit to Elyse. "The offer still stands to come to the packhouse." He reminds her gently. He turns his attention back to Kateri and the others. "It's not necessarily the officers, but most are only interested in tooting their own horns or overinflating their mates or mates to be." He nods to Alaska, "All I can say is ... keep doing what you're doing. Let the glory hounds chase their own tails. In the end, it will be their downfall."

"What is on your mind, Wren?", she queries the woman as her almond gaze turns towards her, watching with a slight tip of her shoulder downwards. As Everlee speaks, her attention moves towards her with a tip forward of her head through various points as she follows along. "I have given suggestion on how to handle a particular matter and he was willing to see it through until I realized that even a breath of there is a fracture turned to violent outbursts from particular kin and garou alike." A faint curve of her lips forms a frown as she turns her eyes to the ground. "But Officers are the veins, the ones that should have their eyes open the most to what is going on around the sept instead of being closed off to what or who interests them only. I watch their interactions, I watch how they chase individuals they see as potential pack mates while ignoring those that do not show case the same interest but both should be given the same welcome at the very least. How to fix that? I do not know. My voice is small, and I do not understand urrah septs." Then there's an Elyse that brings a warm smile to flourish across her lips as she watches the other one. "Hello, Echoes in Spring. Would you like some water?", she offers her own bottle out towards the other one. She looks over towards Niall. "I will never stop improving myself and continuing on my work. I just have seen others be forgotten about and it pains me." <English>

Wren looks toward the newcomer swiftly, and then gives the wolf a brief nod. She takes another swig from the small flask and looks out to the city. One shoulder lifts, tense, moving in a taut circle before it drops again. "Not an urrah thing," she says in that hoarse rasp. "I d'no. This place is just fuckin' weird."

"Someone left a mat," Elyse points at the corner. "Whoever did clearly wants someone to stay here," she notes. "It could be a trap, but I doubt it. If it happens to be someone else's bed, then I am merely borrowing it." She offers a smile, then folds her feet in under her thighs as she sits in a pretzeled cross-legged fashion in front of the fire. "Besides, I would not want to impose on the Sept when I have not proven myself useful." Holding her hands out in front of her, she smiles at Niall, saying, "Thank you, Niall-rhya. I apologize, but I seem to have forgotten your deed name and I mean no disrespect in referring to you by the name the humans gave you." Then she nods in Kateri's direction at the offer of water. She makes no suggestion or adds anything to the discussion about officers and alphas, save for agreeing with Wren, "Is is very fucking weird! Not surprising, but an excellent observation."

Everlee has said her peace, but she nods to Kateri's points made. With no clear path forward, she falls into silence to wander, mentally, through the options she sees before her. She sips her drink and stares into the tiny flames of the tiny fire, burning merrily in the remains of someone's can of beans. A good thing the water and time cleaned it out long before she began that fire.

"There are things that happen here that nae make sense to me." Niall says. "I've been here over a year and still have nae completely acclimated to." He looks to Elyse and smiles a little, "Wrath of Danu." He tells her, "But the honorific should only be used with my Deed name. Niall is fine." He assures her. "I donnae hear anything in your tone to think you've been anything but polite and respectful." Niall turns his attention back to Kateri. "Aye, there's been many things forgotten. Many good deeds forgotten." A light shrug. "The pettiness and politicking here is worse than I saw in the Silver Tara. Here's it's just high school fuckery."

The bristle of eyebrows brings a slight curve inwards, knitting at the bridge of her nose to form faint lines to cross along it. She watches the expressions of those surrounding her, listening to the words of those that wish to share them then turns towards Niall. "Your voice may be the best to carry the message from the below, that Peacekeeper-rhya should encourage his Officers to seek out individuals not just for their own gain but to witness those that are often over looked that carry this sept and just understand there is more to this sept than those that they want to pay attention to. I watch as my mate and others aid new comers that are often ignored by Officers with packs looking to fill their ranks that do not believe they would make suitable members of their pack be forgotten. I know that changes can not happen over night but perhaps one voice at a time building to it and in the meantime, we continue to do what we always have done." A sigh passes through her lips as sadness rests temporarily within her eyes as he turns towards Elyse as she settles down. "Yes, it is weird," she agrees with the observation. "But it is home or now." She reaches out to to squeeze against Alaska's arm as she moves to settle herself down next to Elyse, twisting around to press her forehead against Eylse's arm in a wolfish greeting belatedly. "Sometime when you travel to Jaguar's territory, I have something that you may like that is special feast." <English>

Wren looks over her shoulder, and then finds her way to Everlee and her little fire, dropping down to her knees next to the redhead and joining her in that silent contemplation.

"Wrath of Danu-rhya! Yes, my apologies. I was unsure of the etiquette, thank you for this instruction," Elyse responds to Niall with a bright smile. She leans her head forward to press her face into Kateri's hair, inhaling deeply, then leans back. "I genuinely look forward to it. Finding food in the city is very difficult."

Speaking of which: rummaging through her jacket pockets, Elyse produces a dead pigeon. She begins to pluck out its feathers with little efficient pincer stabs of her fingers, murmuring something that sounds almost like prayer, but in a whispered sing-song. Plucked, shredded feathers float around her like dancing wisps. Once the bird's underbelly is plucked, Elyse brings the pigeon to her mouth and bites into it with a squelch and a smear of blood over her mouth and left cheek. Her blunted human teeth crunch through the breastbone well enough; she pulls the remainder away from the bird then extracts the heart with a deft hand. She pops that into her mouth and bites down on it with a loud pop. Chewing and making a slightly disgusted face, she looks down at the eviscerated bird corpse and shakes her head gently.

She speaks low enough so as not to disturb the conversation -- a benediction for herself: "I remind myself to thank Gaia for what I have been given that She should ensure I survive to see the sunrise." The blood on her teeth glints off the firelight as she speaks.

Everlee leans against Wren when the other woman joins her by the little flame. "Popularity contests blow serious chunks," is all the redhead offers. And then she points at Elyse. "That is a most excellent thing to remember. I do the same!"

The scent of Kateri can be chalked up to nature, very herbal in the way that tends to work so much with plants and the ground itself that it seems to infuse within her but also probably aides that she creates her own shampoos, conditions and soaps based off nature. "I trade for food. Eksa'a Onontsi is a carnivore. I have chickens that provide eggs every day. I tend to trade most often for goats. The abuellas, the grandmothers, that run the stores nearby also feed me.. a lot. I have a lot left over and Eska'a Onontsi says that he will get fat if he continues to finish food for me.", she explains to Elyse with a pull of her lips forming a partial grin. IT does not seem to bother her withi the least watching her eat the pigeon. "There is an organ in there that will taste very bad to your tongue in that form. I can show you how it looks to avoid it. It only tastes decent when cooked." She tilts her head up as she leans slightly against Elyse, enough to keep a contact with the garou next to her without limiting her limb movement for feeding. Her eyes flicker between those present, primarily now falling between Everlee and Wren. "Is there an anti popularity contest we can join? I bet I would win that," she tries to say in a joking tone. <English>

Niall glances beside him and his lips purse a bit. He turns his attention back to Kateri. "I know the feeling. Those that would seem interesting are cornered off and kept out of reach." Niall says. A gestures towards Elyse, "Just to be clear, Joan speaks highly of you and you're welcoming into our home is also a chance to see if it may be a place you'd like to call home." He grins a bit. "You would nae go hungry. There is always something to eat laying aboot."

A deep breath, Niall relaxes a bit and drains the booze in his glass. He reaches into his sporran and pulls out a Flask.

Elyse points towards Everlee with that universal sign of recognition that seems to bridge even the species gap. She gets it! And briefly scenting the air, she smiles at Wren, eyes half-lidding. "I should very much like to see the ocean."

"Eggs taste like shit," Elyse informs Kateri brightly, "but the offer is very much appreciated. Humans put so much garbage in their meat that I generally prefer to find things. I go up to that park," she nods at Kateri. "But it is a long walk." She offers the bird over to Kateri to help with the organ and turns to Niall. "Joan is very sweet. I enjoyed her hospitality at her," she lowers her eyebrows, "dorm room? Is that the right phrase? She was very kind. I hope to see her again, and I will consider that. It seems that wolf-born Galliards are in high demand in this Sept!"

Wren looks over to Elyse. "You could learn t'surf," she says. The business of dead bird innards doesn't seem to faze her.

Wren jerks slightly, for whatever reason. Her focus returns to the little fire.

"Do you remember the galliard with no song? It is another one that has disappeared, he was always so willing and greeting everyone he could. He was a pup that needed guidance but no Officer would take the time to aide him.", she says towards Niall with a glance up towards his direction. "It saddened me to watch even Officers of his own tribe not taking the time to really drive his path except Rollercoaster in his own way but they chase after the new garou that they want in their pack. High Times may be a bit much sometimes to deal with but even he was rejected from aide."

Kateri chuckles softly at the declaration of eggs. "The shells are good calcium, I grind them and put them into the gardens. I eat the eggs for protein in the mornings because I can quickly devour them on my way out. My mate prefers his food raw." The bird is gently taken, fingers work delicately into its opened frame as the squishing noises of blood echoing out along her fingers comes to emerge. "The goats I receive are raised natural. They live happy, free of Western medicine pumping them full of things that they do not need." There's a sickening POP noise that echoes out as the fingers pull back swiftly with the gizzard amongst them. She offers the bird, sans gizzard, back to Elyse to finish eat. "I still work weekends at the ranch during their busy times. I can give you a ride on those days, there is a lot of open acreage out where it is to hunt and I will show you where to avoid he trails they use for the horses." The mention of surfacing brings a corner of her mouth to curve up slightly. "Perhaps you could take Echoes in Spring to the ocean next time you surf to show her?", she asks of Wren. <English>

"Surfing sounds like a fun time." Niall says. He looks to Kateri and then Elyse, "We'll have to make plans to do so soon." A soft chuckle, "The good news, with me along, we can pick the best spot and have it all to ourselves."

Elyse smiles at Wren, giving a light half-bow of her upper body. "I would love to learn how to surf if you would have me. They say there is land on the other side of the ocean. Is that true?" She licks some of the blood from her lips, turns her head and spits away from the fire and the little party. Taking the bird back with a grimace, she continues to eat it like a child eating a particularly bitter vegetable. A goat would be far better than this.

"I have a story about medicine! It is my Rite of Passage. Would anyone like to hear it? Truly it is the story of a Ragabash called Charlie." She leans over to ask Niall, "Can I wash my mouth with that?" Pointing at his flask.

Alaska comes back up the stairs. She has several large bags from the local hamberger joint. Walking over, she puts one by Wren and Evee, giving them a smile. The others she walks over to Kateri, Niall and Elyse. "Made a food run. Cause...food and pregnant sis needs food badly." Flashing a smile, she looks over Kateri, just checking she is still doing ok.

Niall looks to his Flask and then to Elyse. "This is awakened." He says with a grin, but offers the flask. "It will definitely cleanse your pallet."

"Tell us," this from Everlee as she blinks at the flames and then looks at Elyse. "I'd like to hear all about it." She doesn't move much, just nurses her drink and drifts between the flame and the story to be told.

Wren blinks at Kateri and then Elyse; she gives the wolf-born a little nod at the question. (Yes, it's true.) Alaska, when she drops off the bag, gets a mildly startled look. "Thanks, North." She goes back to a careful, maybe slightly distracted study of the flames... after a brief flash of a look to the redhead beside her.

The blood fingers are simply brought to her lips, cleaning her fingers like she would be some sauce and not raw pigeon blood. She tips her head towards Niall at the mention of clearing he beach then over towards Wren at the question of teaching to surf. In mirror to Everlee's response, Kateri glances up towards Elyse. "I would like to hear it." The mention of food brings her attention quickly over towards Alaska, "You're amazing, sister," she says. "I am starving all the time it feels like." <English>

Niall leans a little to E'vee as he looks to the others. He nods in agreement. "Yes, I'm always in the mood for a good story." He says.

Elyse doesn't particularly know why someone would awaken water, but that probably explains the smell. She opens the flask and takes a quick drink, swallows, and sputters out a cough. While coughing, she hands the flask back to Niall, then stands up to her feet and steps away from the fire for a moment, doubling over to catch her breath. "What," she says between coughs. "Why--" and, quieting down, takes several deep breaths, in through the nose, out through the mouth. Regaining her composure. She stands back up to her full height and walks to a portion of the area that is relatively free. "I have not done this on two legs, so I will try my best."

She plants her legs wide and says, "Hear me, Mother! Acknowledge me, Triptych! I speak of a cub named Charlie, dead before his deeds were written in the Silver Record!" She spins on her heels and comes down in a pantomime of stealth, moving sinuously towards the flames. "Slipping his way through a facility, Magadon was its name, leading us through shadow," she suddenly leaps away from the light of the fire, "to shadow," she leaps again. "Until our shaman was sighted by the bane." She pulls herself up to her full height and holds her hands like she's surrendering. "The Response Team came and fired three shots and our warrior valiantly met his end!" She does a roll and tumble on the ground, then snake-poses herself back to her feet. "But Charlie knew the way, knew the halls and walls' bending invitation that led us deeper in, deeper," she moves back to the firelight, moving her arms in a wiggle above her to cast a shadow behind her that looks vaguely like a medusa's head.

Wren watches the storyteller, her expression tense and somehow still empty.

Alaska rips open a bag, having chosen a fish sandwich. Well it could be fish. Flashing a smile, she looks to not want to interupt as she listens. Crouching down, soda in one hand, 'fish' filet in the other.

Everlee, a little tipsy, is caught, listening closely as the story begins to unfold. Little ooo's and aawwww's come from her as the action makes this turn and that. When the shadowy nope-ropes appear, she catches her breath, eyes wide.

"And Charlie found the chemical bath that doused the pills consumed by man!" Elyse continues. "Charlie found the holding cells with children locked in silent hells, and with his twitching fingers keyed the code that let the children free. The tubes and shackles holding them cut and opened and then Charlie, the deedless Ragabash born of no Tribe bade this single sister to his side," her syncopation falters there slightly, and she comes away from the shadow play to her sneaking movements again. "His sister found too late, in the struggle, a brutal spate of vicious assaults on his form both spirit and the human that he wore," she throws her head back and presses the back of her hand against it and keens loudly, a wailing cry. It sounds half for the performance, but also very real. Tears run tracks in the soot and blood on her face when she looks back to the assembled.

"Charlie, deedless Ragabash gave his life," she turns and grips her chest, collapsing to her knees. "Deedless Ragabash, so that we would survive, Echoes of Spring and Morgan the Shaman, the children freed and led away from Magadon." Silent now, she takes a deep breath, sighs it out, then goes to sit down in front of the fire.

"He was a good male," she finishes, no longer speaking in the syncopated rhythm. "And a friend. He wanted to join the Children of Gaia." She offers a light smile, wipes her eyes, and picks up the pigeon again.

"I do not drink the fire water, it tastes as bad as eggs," she says with a wink towards Elyse. The opening of the food bag brings her attention swiftly over towards Alaska, glancing down at the food being withdrawn then back up to her sister. Kateri's attention moves back over to Elyse as the first line of the story bursts into the air. She's mated to a galliard so naturally stories draw her interest, especially when it comes to another galliard telling them. She leans slightly forward, pressing limbs down against her lap as her eyes widen watching. <English>

+ROLL/+DICE> Elyse: Charisma + Expression vs. 6 -> 5 successes. (10 10 9 8 7 4)

Enraptured, Niall smiles a little as he watches. He leans forward as the story reaches it's apex. At the loss of Charlie and the others, Niall's excitement dims a bit. "Charlie deserves his deed name and to be remembered." Niall says. "Brave-To-The-End." Niall offers with a little nod. He offers a little bow of his head to Elyse. "That was a beautiful story, thank you lass, for sharing."

Everlee tugs Wren in closer to her because Wren is Wren and E is E. And this is just what they do. Head on Niall's shoulder, she's wrapped up in the story and Brave-to-the-End.

"You are welcome," Elyse responds to Niall. "And the name is fitting, he was brave," she looks down at the ground, tracing spirals in the dirt. "I hope I see him in the Summerland one day." Falling silent in the firelight, she plucks bits of meat off the pigeon to shovel into her mouth. "Thank you all for listening," she says, tilting her head to the side.

"Yeah," Wren says in her quiet whisper-rasp. She might have been about to say more, but her voice is stolen as she's tugged closer to Everlee's side.

"He died with honor, the way that all garou strive to do," is the murmur from Kateri as she glances over towards her side to her sister. The departure of Niall and Everlee gets a tip of her head within a nod. "Thank you for sharing your voice with us, Echoes in Spring." She glances towards Alaska's direction, "You should tell Echoes of Spring your challenge that you face. I think she would enjoy hearing it." <English>

Alaska stands, looking for a napkin as she has sauce on her hand. "Elyse, that was beautiful. " Slowly she approaches but not to step on the tracings. "I have always wished I could tell stories like that. My brother got that skill." Taking a long breath, "But people sharing stories like this, around a meal, its still so rarely done. Sure, big gatherings, but our people benefit for more than those few times." Stepping over to the wall, she drags her fingers along it. Getting the bits off, she licks the end of one. "Echoes in Spring. Yes, its my challenge for Rank. I am rescuing a boulder, but just not any boulder. It was stolen from the land."

Wren's gaze is locked on the redhead for a time, as Everlee and Niall leave. Then the conversation distracts her from her distraction, and she looks back over to Alaska. "Wait, what?"

Elyse smiles at Wren and Everlee, then folds her hands on her laps, turning her attention up to Alaska as she approaches the wall. "It is a skill, so you can learn," she says simply. Then: "Rescuing a boulder?" The lupus is not one for any sort of manipulation and her expressions would make most people think they're psychic. Clear bewilderment is written across her face. "I do not quite understand, could you elaborate?"

The silence begins to drift across her tongue as her eyes flicker between the direction of Elyse and Alaska. From a corner of her mouth the lips begin to twist, a knowing partial smile briefly birthing upon her mouth until fading into a neutral setting. At Wren's declaration it brings her eyes to dance over towards the other kinfolk. Kateri reaches out for the bag left behind of food, reaching in until finding something left behind in the form of roundness food and is withdrawn.

Alaska grins. "Well, this guy buys land and clears it to plant like, wheat. Then harvests and ships it off. Well he found a boulder with som ancient runes for rain upon it. The cycles got all screwed up on the land after that. Flooding or draught. The guy put it in his yard, like near a fountain cause it looks nice." Rolling her eyes, "So, I'm going to go get it and put it back. Try to appease the spirits and heal the land."

Wren's on her feet by now, probably she rose when Niall and Everlee left. She watches Alaska steadily, taking in the answer.

"Wow," Elyse shakes her head. "That is an impressive task. I am also continually impressed by how low my opinion of humans sinks the more I hear about them." She scans the little party for water, finds a half-full bottle that has been abandoned and drinks from it. She is a little tipsy given the awakened booze from Niall's flask. "How do you plan to do this?"

"Many take the land for granted and do not understand the connection that we all feel to it. I envy the Children of Gaia in their path to attempt to correct this out look through many of mankind but.. we have seen the worst of it, we have witnessed the destruction of our people and the land that they loved. Perhaps for us it is less about attempting to educae the people and more to save what we can," she offers within softer tones. Kateri's eyes shifting fro Elyse to Wren then back to Alaska. <English>

Alaska grits her teeth. "I'm working on it but think its going to be stealing a truck, loading it up and taking it back. I'm still figuring out if the developer is going to be....punished." Her eyes flash mischeif. "Its beyond the challenge, but its mine to do as I want." Breathing in, "Any way I do it, it will be from the shadows and dark as Jaguar intends."

Wren listens, her eyes unreadable as she studies each speaker. "Good," she finally says after Alaska speaks. Then she takes a sip from her flask and returns to that tense prowling around the edges of the roof, as if it's her job to keep watch.

Elyse offers, "Just kill him." It's a simple solution. "Tear his throat out," she taps her own throat with her hand. "If he is dead, he will be unable to prevent you from taking the boulder back." She pulls her legs up to her chest and wraps her arms around them. The fog in the air has created a strong chill that has seeped into her bones. "No need to worry about shadows. Why bother? Dump his body in the desert, let the coyotes pick at his bones."

Faint is the tip of her head forward, the shadows casting along the features of her face seeming to darken within particular areas as she listens to Elyse's offering of killing. Her eyes lift towards Alaska's direction with a slow draw of an eyebrow skyward that brings a few wrinkles to settle along her forehead. "She thinks like one of Jaguar's.", she says towards her sister. "These kind of individuals are beyond saving. They will never know the pain they have caused nor will they ever care." Kateri slips off the faded black hoodie from her frame, and without asking simply drapes it over Elyse's shoulders before she shifts back into her seated position, the cold not seeming to bother the kinfolk. <English>

Alaska nods with a growing grin, not showing teeth. Its almost like she has known lupus born before. "Its already in the plans. The decission is how to kill. But its not a huge decission. I don't want an animal suspected. Kateri had a beatiful idea of making it look like his own incompetance. " She moves to lean to Kateri and nods. "Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. River needs to talk to her."

"I feel like it is just the obvious solution," Elyse responds in a careful tone, lowering her eyebrows. "He took something from your people. If he can defend it, then he will. If he cannot, then he will die." For her it's less about the nature of the thing and more about the end result. A bear wouldn't attempt to lair in a denning ground without expecting the local pack to put up a fight. Appreciating the draped hoodie, she tugs it around her shoulders and leans toward the fire. Her eyes lid, heavy from the activity, warmth, and awakened booze. She struggles, but falls into a seated slumber. Perhaps subconsciously, her form bends and shifts into her native one: a large black-furred wolf with a notched ear, white around the muzzle. The black hoodie is still draped over her fur as she she begins to snore.
