Ransom
Began life as Marvin Ivan Barrow. His mother nicknamed him 'Buck' because he was always 'running around acting like a horse' and the nickname would stick. After turning 18, got hooked up in petty crime in West Dallas in the early 1920s. Took to robbery and auto theft and brought younger brother Clyde in as a partner when he came of age. Buck put family first, willing to kill and server jailtime for Clyde and his brothers and sisters. Married three times, the third time to Blanche Caldwell. Served two years out of six for armed robbery and when he got out, he and his wife Blanche, Clyde, his wife Bonnie and later W.D. Jones would form the Barrow Gang. The gang would make national news for their crime spree up and down the central United States during the early 1930s.
After several deadly shootouts with Police and escaping, Buck was wounded in the head, leaving his brain exposed. The ground would yet again escape. The gang dug a grave for Buck, his wound so severe. Yet, he survived, Bonnie and Clyde keeping the wound clean with hydrogen peroxide. After another shootout, the already terminally wounded Buck was shot in the back a further 6 times and Blanche was wounded in the eye, eventually losing her eyesight. Buck and Blanche did not escape this time. After the operation, Buck contracted pneumonia and would later die of his wounds.
While Buck Barrow died, James Walker walked away after making James an offer on his deathbed by his soon-to-be Sire, J.D. Bollinger. J.D. and James would rejoin Tara Kearney and several others in Dallas. While the country suffered through the Great Depression, Dallas was entering the Texas Oil discovery and subsequent boom. James would put his skills in robbery and extortion to use in the Dallas oil fields, often stealing crucial and difficult to source drilling equipment and holding it for ransom. His activities were so successful and profitable that he earned a new nickname, 'Ransom'. Since the late 1930's, that's been his preferred name with James nearly a forgotten memory.
Now a coterie member with Tara and J.D., Tara made the decision to move west to San Diego during the Second Anarch Revolt and became the Baron. Ransom initially volunteered to solve some initial resentment and problems and since then gets voluntold to handle delicate or stubborn issues. With Tara's disillusion with the Anarch Free States, having become nothing more than Camarilla Lite and reliant on the Camarilla's resources and security, Tara used the Quincunx invasion in 1998 to bring in Camarilla forces to sweep away the bloodied Quincunx and pacify the remaining Anarchs, claiming the Praxis for the Camarilla and taking the position of Prince. Ransom Embraced his Ghoul girlfriend Ruby Wright during the invasion and lives with her and his Ghoul, Junior Seau, in his Domain of Mission Valley in San Diego.
San Diego Kindred | Ransom and Ruby are coming to Los Angeles on 'business' and to handle a problem that's come up. Ransom's status as a member of Tara's coterie would give him some notoriety but he has kept out of politics and was a behind-the-scenes actor. |
Once An Anarch... | Ransom was a reluctant convert to the Camarilla, but Tara's force of personality and reasoning that the best chance Kindred-kind had to protect themselves from the Second Inquisition laid with the Camarilla, was enough to convince him. After twenty years he still has his concerns but has resigned himself to work towards working with the Anarchs, rather than against, especially when it comes to the topic of the Sabbat. |
Problem Solver | Ransom isn't the most tactful of people. Problem resolution for him usually entails getting leverage and applying pressure to the weakest point until the problem breaks. The occasional problem involves hitting the weak point until it shatters. Ransom likes those problems. He's had a long, long time to be remorseful for the terror he sowed and the people he killed and keeps an eye out for opportunities to right wrongs and apply sometimes not-so-legal justice. |
Trouble | With just a glance at him, he looks like trouble. When those eyes latch on and his evil little smirk lifts the corner of his mouth, you can be sure he IS trouble. Trouble for you? Someone else? Can be interesting to find out and watch the ensuing chaos. |
